When we were asked to contribute to TEDxTruro as digital marketing sponsors, we jumped at the chance. We recognise TED as a way of sharing innovation and great ideas, something ingrained into our own organisational values.
TEDx events are independently organised TED events – TED being the enormous not-for-profit with a mission to spread ideas through short talks, that begun life as a technology, entertainment and design conference in 1984.
Held on the 9th September 2016, the inaugural TEDxTruro event was a day of new and exciting ideas, delivered by a mix of academics, professionals, and performers.
Each speaker was in one way or another tied to Cornwall, home to many of us at Jarrang, and every brilliantly-delivered talk stirred discussions amongst the audience, but there were two in particular that struck a chord with us as data-driven marketers.
Dr Craig Newman: Technology and health – there’s an
app for that
A clinical psychologist and software designer, Dr Craig Newman works with patients with long term conditions. In his talk, he discusses eHealth, and how digital innovations could help to combat challenges caused by a need for more resource.
EpSMon, an epilepsy self-monitor he has worked to develop feeds the most cutting edge research and data into the app to identify risk and empower epilepsy sufferers to take control of their health.
Dr Jess Tyrrell: Is Life Tougher for Short Men and
A researcher at the University of Exeter, Dr Jess Tyrrell’s talk dispels some of the myths and highlights the pitfalls of big data analysis, and why we should take some of the associations we see drawn, in national press and advertising for example, with a pinch of salt.
Spinning a well-research topic on it’s head, she asks ‘does your height and/or weight cause differences in your socioeconomic status?’ and when looking at the relationship between household income and gender, they started to see some really interesting results.
We’re extremely proud to have been part of the event, supporting through digital marketing, the build of a brand new website and two of our staff joining the TEDxTruro team to support behind the scenes.
We’re already looking forward to next year, and to helping spread even more great ideas. Watch all of this year’s talks here.
